» About the author

A book for dogs who would like to understand their humans.

Othello is the dog of a lady author and as such a perceptive observer of human handling of speech. He knows that a solid foundation of basic vocabulary can prevent misunderstandings and greatly eases the cohabitation of pet and homo sapiens.
In his Enzyclopedia for Pet Dogs Othello explains the world as it really is – an A-Z from a dog’s perspective.

Understatement

»Innate and nonetheless ideologically substantiated mindset of the pet dog. Slang: acting dumb. There are two good reasons for understatement. Firstly, hierarchy demands it: the homo sapiens requires constant reassurance that the pet dog is more stupid than he or she is – a requirement that is not unimportant generally for love (see: love, true). Secondly, understatement has something to do with the pet dog’s vow of silence. Whoever can differentiate between an apple and a pear will be sent to do the shopping. Whoever can find lost keys will forever be pestered to look for them. In this regard, and only in this regard, the pet dog is to run to the left when the homo sapiens indicates the right. Understatement means wealth or to quote the book of books: Blessed be those weak of mind. See ref. in: foreword, comic dogs, Rantanplan.«

Reviews

»Schopenhauer’s poodle, Thomas Mann’s sheep-dog, Faulkner’s terrier ... they have been praised and cherished in literature. Now at last Juli Zeh, herself among the most celebrated writers of the younger generation, lets the poet’s dog speak for himself. This encyclopedia captures the entire universe – from a dog’s perspective.«
Rheinische Post

»A hilarious read, bubbling over with ideas and yet of high literary standard - standing positively out from the usual doggy-sentimentalism.«
Berliner Morgenpost

»Funny and knowledgeable. Rating: five out of five!«
Neue Presse Hannover

»Juli Zeh’s new book is all at once warmhearted, shrewd, and political - and highly enjoyable.«
Hessischer Rundfunk

»The human mind and soul explored by it’s best companion on four legs. Othello takes up the cudgels for all dogs who oppose their owners’ frequent attempts at canine humanization.«
Frankfurter Neue Presse

»A wonderful piece of literature and a comprehensive view of the world presented in delectable little chapters.«
Norddeutscher Rundfunk

»Sometimes wagging his tail, sometimes biting, but always photogenic, Othello offers us his thoughts on the world, humans, and dogs.«
St. Galler Tagblatt

»Entertaining and illuminating – not only for dog lovers.«
Oberösterreicher Nachrichten

»Highly amusing, delivering new insight into the human race, too. (...) Makes a wonderful present for any dog person!«
Journal Frankfurt

»This encyclopaedia has long been overdue. Luckily, Othello has attended to the project. (...) An indispensable compendium for any dog or human of reasonable intelligence.«
General-Anzeiger

»Illuminating. Even those not too keen on dogs will enjoy this, as Juli Zeh is far too intelligent than to limit herself to one perspective only.«
Sächsische Zeitung

»A most pleasurable read.«
Gala

»Highly recommended to ensure the frictionless communication with your human companion.«
Nürnberger Zeitung
